On Thursday night, the bodies of an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Manish Vijay, his mother, and his sister were discovered in his home in Kochi.

The bodies were recognized by police as those of Manish Vijay (44), his sister Shalini, and his mother Shakunthala Agarwal.

Manish Vijay (42), Additional Commissioner, Central Tax, Excise, and Customs, Kochi, Shalini Vijay (35), JPSC-1 topper and former Deputy Collector, Jharkhand and Shakuntala Agarwal (80), their mother were found inside house number 114 at the Central Excise Quarters in Eachamukku, Kakkanad. Manish and Shalini were found hanging, while their mother’s body was on the bed, covered with a sheet and strewn with flowers and a diary with Hindi entries was recovered from Manish’s room.

Manish has another sister living abroad, with his diary instructing that she be informed of the deaths and the bodies have been sent to Kalamassery Medical College for autopsy, with police waiting for reports to determine the exact cause of death.

Their mother’s body was discovered on a cot, and the decayed remains of Manish and his sister were discovered hanging in separate rooms. According to the police, the discovery was found inside the central excise and customs department’s official headquarters in Kakkanad, Kochi.

Manish had been posted in Kochi for over a year and a half, and his mother and sister had moved in four months ago and investigators are trying to locate Shalini’s husband.

Manish Vijay who was previously employed at the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) audit wing in Kochi, was an additional commissioner with the central excise and customs department.

The family was from Jharkhand’s Ranchi. According to the police, an unnatural death case has been reported. Manish took a week-long leave of absence, but once the leave ended, he failed to appear for duty.

A subordinate officer at the CGST office went in search of him on Thursday night and found the bodies of him and his sister. After calling the police, they discovered their mother’s body inside the door.

The specific dates of the deaths, which occurred between February 13 and February 20, are being investigated by police. According to the police, Manish was a bachelor, and his sister worked for the coal department.

Despite taking a week off, Manish did not come back to work. After several calls went unanswered, worried coworkers came to his quarters. They called the police when they noticed a bad odour. The three remains were discovered in a very decomposed form after officers pushed open the door.

Media reports claim that the family’s neighbours characterized them as solitary and rarely interacting with the outside world. Although Manish’s mother was occasionally spotted sitting outdoors, the house was still mainly deserted.

Four months ago, Manish’s mother and sister went to Kochi, where he had been assigned for more than a year and a half. Additionally, investigators are looking for Shalini’s spouse because they think he might have important information.

Police are awaiting reports to ascertain the precise cause of death after the bodies were sent to Kalamassery Medical College for autopsy.
