A senior Indian Police Service (IPS) Officer named Shiladitya Chetia recently passed away. The Assam Director General of Police, GP Singh, informed the tragic news about the officer’s death. The Assam Police also came out to express their grief over the death of Home Secretary Shiladitya Chetia on X.
Cause of death
According to the official statement of the state police, Chetia committed suicide just minutes after hearing the news of his wife’s tragic death in the hospital. His wife was reportedly suffering from cancer and had been undergoing treatment for the past two months at Nemcare, a private hospital. According to Hitesh Baruah, the managing director of Nemcare, Chetia shot himself in the head with his service weapon while in the ICU, besides his wife’s dead body. He added:
We rushed in and found him lying beside his wife’s body. We tried to save him but couldn’t. He had shot himself.”

Shiladitya Chetia was a senior IPS officer from the batch of 2009. He is a native of Assam and his father was also a police officer, who served as superintendent of police across various districts like Tinsukia, Nalbari, Kokrajhar and Barpeta. Chetia was just 44 years old at the time of his death and leaves behind his two sisters. Sadly, the IPS officer had just lost his mother and mother-in-law in the past few months as well.

Police career
Shiladitya Chetia was a resident of Assam state and served across various important positions in the Assam Police. Throughout his career, he was known for his loyalty, hard work, and excellent service. Chetia even received a President’s gallantry medal for his service on Independence Day in 2015. He led multiple operations against criminal and terrorist outfits and last served as the Assam home and political secretary.

Shiladitya married his wife Agamoni on May 12, 2013. The couple had an arranged marriage and sadly did not have a child. Agamoni studied English and foreign languages at Tezpur University and she was a university topper.
