In the US city of Chicago, a group of masked guys attacked and stole from an Indian student. On Tuesday, February 6, a video showing armed men pursuing the Indian student went viral online, even though the event happened on February 5. The victim has been identified as Hyderabad native Syed Mazahir Ali. At Indiana Wesleyan University in Chicago, he is finishing up his master’s degree in information technology.
Reports state that while Ali was on his way back to his West Ridge residence, he noticed some dubious males trailing him. He took off, sprinting. Ali was being pursued by at least three armed thieves in the footage. Eventually, they manage to apprehend him. Ali was attacked, had his wallet and cell phone taken from him, and was bleeding. He was bruised multiple times.

On social media, another video of Ali covered in blood is also making the rounds. In an X post, Ali revealed that four individuals cornered him as he was bringing food home and later they beat and kicked him, and then he fled with his phone. In the video, Ali begged for help. He even cited America as a dream where he came to pursue his master’s and fulfil his dreams, but the previous day’s incident gave him trauma.

Ali’s family has sought assistance from the Indian government
Following the assault, Ali’s family pleaded with the Indian government to get involved. In a letter to India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, his wife, Syeda Ruquiya Fatima Razvi asked for the greatest care for her husband. She even urged the government to make necessary arrangements so that she could travel to the USA along with her three minor children to be with her husband.
The Indian Consulate in Chicago stated that they have been in contact with Ali and his family and have promised to help in any way they can. The local authorities who are looking into the matter have also been contacted by the Consulate.
