In the 22-year-old’s police complaint, she said that she first connected with Varun Kumar on Instagram in 2018. At the age of 17, Kumar repeatedly s*xually assaulted the victim after making her a marriage commitment. A senior Bengaluru Police official was quoted by PTI on Tuesday saying:
Based on the complaint received from the woman, we have registered a case on Monday against the Hockey player under the appropriate section of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and sections 376 (rape) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code.”
Who is Varun Kumar?
Varun Kumar is a hockey player who represents both the Indian national team and Punjab Warriors in the Hockey India League as a defender. He was born on 25 July 1995 in Punjab, India and the 28-year-old stands 1.72 m (5 ft 8 in). He belongs to Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh’s District Chamba.
A look at Varun Kumar’s career
It was during his school years when Kumar took up hockey. In the 2012 Junior National Championships, he competed for his native state of Punjab and did so admirably, receiving a call-up to the junior national squad.
Before Kumar’s strong performance in the 2014 Junior National Championships earned him a recall to the junior national squad, an injury sustained shortly after the competition kept him quiet for two years.
Kumar was able to clinch a contract with the Hockey India League’s Punjab Warriors quite quickly. For the 2014 campaign, he was retained by the side. Following the season, he was kept on for the league’s 2015 and 2016 seasons for a two-year tenure.
