Sophia Qureshi bio
Colonel Sophia Qureshi is an Indian army officer who serves in the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals. She first gained national and international recognition back in 2016 when she became the first woman officer to command an Indian Army contingent. Colonel Sophia commanded the contingent during a multinational military exercise called Exercise Force 18. The landmark event showcased Sophia’s leadership on a global stage. Sophia Qureshi was born and raised in Gujarat and grew up in a military family, as her grandfather also served in the Indian Army.
While the name of her parents isn’t known, her father, Tajuddin served in the army as a religious teacher with her having a sister as well. Her grandfather served in the army as well.

Colonel Sofia Qureshi studied from MS University and completed her Bachelor of Science (B.Sc., 1992-1995) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Biochemistry (M.Sc. 1995-1997) from the Science Faculty, the M.S. University of Baroda. She had re-enrolled for a Ph.D. before joining the Army.
Military career
Colonel Qureshi has served in the Indian Army for over two decades, whit her most notable moment being her historic role in Exercise Force 18. During her time in the army, she has served in six years of United Nations Peacekeeping Operations. While serving under the UN peacekeeping force, she notably served in the Democratic Republic of Congo back in 2006. There, she helped monitor ceasefires and supported various humanitarian operations in war-affected regions.
