Varnali Deka, the district commissioner of Nalbari, gained notoriety after a court ordered that a FIR be filed against her for harassing her lower-level officers.
During the Lok Sabha elections, Aparna Sarma, a female member of the Assam Civil Service (ACS) who was a Circle official (CO) in the West Nalbari Revenue Circle, accused IAS Varnali Deka of mentally tormenting her.

According to reports, Aparna Sarma followed the court’s directive to file a formal complaint against the officer and did so at the Nalbari Sadar police station. On January 24, 2024, the UPSC officer reported experiencing significant mental distress after an incident involving the purchasing of some products for freedom fighters.
The confrontation escalated on May 7, 2024, when DC Varnali Deka humiliated Aparna Sarma with derogatory remarks when she was on election duty in Nalbari town.
Assam’s Nalbari district deputy commissioner and IAS officer Varnali Deka is once again in the news after she had filed a case against three people for cyber stalking and making s*xually derogatory comments. In 2023, Naresh Barua commented on a Facebook post of Varnali Deka, ‘No makeup today, madam?’ Amit Chakraborty responded to this comment with a laughing emoji and to this, IAS officer Deka replied, what is your problem? Soon after, Deka lodged a complaint against the three at the Kokrajhar police station and after the complaint was lodged, the police started an investigation against these three people. Sections 354D (cyber stalking) and 354A (s*xual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) were cited in the case.
In January 2024, the police called Amit Chakraborty to the police station and eventually, Chakraborty got conditional bail from the court, but for this he had to travel 200 kilometers.
IAS Varnali Deka was born on February 15, 1979 in Guwahati. According to a 2009 Times of India article, Varnali Deka began preparing for the civil services after completing her B.Tech in Bangalore and pursuing an MBA at IIT Bombay. The IAS officer from the 2009 batch has a B.Tech degree in computer engineering.
Deka belongs to the Koch Rajbongshi caste which is given OBC category by the government of India and the Koch Rajbongshi kingdom was the main infrastructure for development and growth of Assamese civilization.
She is married to IPS officer Vivekraj Singh with whom she has a daughter.

Varnali Deka career
Varnali Deka made the decision to take the civil services exam after finishing her degree coursework. She passed the test twice. She was able to obtain an IPS rank on her first try. She was unhappy with the result, though. She achieved an IAS rank on her second try in 2009 with an all India rank of 16.
