Vyomika Singh co-leads media briefing on Operation Sindoor
IAF Wing Commander Vyomika Singh recently delivered the key details of India’s Operation Sindoor during a press conference on May 7, 2025. The conference was a joint press conference including the Indian military and Indian navy. According to official statements, the strikes were a direct response to the recent Pahalgam attack and are aimed at dismantling various terror infrastructures across the Line of Control.
During the conference, Singh shared the platform with several other senior officers, including Colonel Sophia Qureshi. Singh’s presence symbolized a powerful image of gender representation in the defense forces. Moreover, her articulation of the mission objectives also reflected the increasing role of women in frontline military affairs.

Vyomika Singh who is a Hindu by religion is an Indian Air Force Wing Commander who is playing a major role in “Operation Sindoor”. Her name itself, Vyomik’a, which means “the one who resides in the sky,” inspired her to pursue a career in aviation. Singh’s desire to join the IAF started out as a childhood dream and led her to join the National Cadet Corps (NCC). She then went on to complete her engineering degree and eventually became the first member of her family to join the armed forces. After joining the Air force, she was commissioned as a helicopter pilot and earned a permanent commission in the flying branch back on December 18, 2019.
Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, an accomplished helicopter pilot in the Indian Air Force, played a leading role in Operation Sindoor and has over 2,500 flying hours and a record of high-altitude rescues.
She enrolled with the National Cadet Corps (NCC) to pursue her career and thereafter completed an engineering degree. While details about her parents and family members aren’t known, she is the first from her family in the armed forces.
On December 18, 2019, Vyomika Singh received her permanent commission and the wing commander has also managed Chetak and Cheetah helicopters in difficult regions like Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast.
Vyomika, who’s married to an Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot, had previously shared how her name, perhaps, carried her destiny to become a pilot during a panel discussion hosted by a private channel in 2023 saying, “I was in Class-6 when the Eureka moment happened — I realised that I wanted to be a pilot and own the sky. We were having a discussion in the class on the meaning of names. Somebody shouted, ‘You are Vyomika, which means you own the sky’. Since that day, I wanted to be a pilot. This was in early 1990s,”

Although her exact age is not confirmed, Vyomika Singh is likely aged between 30-40 years and was a teenage NCC cadet.
Military career
Wing Commander Vyomika Singh has reportedly clocked in over 2,500 flying hours, operating various helicopters like the Chetak and Cheetah. She has flown over high-risk terrains, including Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. Back in November 2020, she led critical rescue missions across Arunachal Pradesh under extreme weather and altitude conditions.
Aside from operational roles, Singh has also participated in a landmark all-women tri-services mountaineering expedition to Mt. Manirang back in 2021, where she scaled 21,650 feet. Owing to her achievements and hard work, she has earned praise and recognition from the Chief of Air Staff.
