Verstappenโ€™s victory also highlights the crucial role that Hannah Schmitz plays as the Principal strategy Engineer at Red Bull.

Following the victory, Verstappen stated:

Today, I think Hannah, our strategist, was insanely calm. Yeah, sheโ€™s very good. You canโ€™t afford many mistakes. Itโ€™s of course very hard to always be on the good side, letโ€™s say it like that.

But I think we have a lot of good guys and girls in the team.

The University of Cambridge graduate masterminded Sergio Perezโ€˜s Monaco Grand Prix win and has consistently made the right calls to help Red Bull build a commanding lead over the strategically inept Ferrari.

Ever since she was a toddler, Schmitz had a keen interest in cars and engineering. During her time at Cambridge, she led Cambridgeโ€™s solar racing team to its first attempt at the World Solar Challenge in Australia.

Growing up, she was apparently a keen water polo player as well. Schmitz graduated in 2009 with a Masterโ€™s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and walked straight into an internship at Red Bull Racing that same year.

Schmitz commented about her early career on the Red Bull website, stating:

I think thereโ€™s a lot of people that initially maybe donโ€™t have the confidence in you to do the job. As a strategist you have to tell a lot of people what to do and theyโ€™ve got to listen to you, so itโ€™s building up that trust and I think as a woman unfortunately that was harder.

But now I have that respect and I hope other young women who want to get into the sport will see that you can do it, can embrace it, and weโ€™ll see more diversity.

Hannah Schmitz Husband and Net Worth

Schmitz is currently married to Markus Schmitz and has an estimated net worth of 10 million USD.

Hannah Schmitzโ€™s breakout F1 career moment

Schmitz initially started at the Red Bull team as a Modelling and Simulation Engineer. After which she quickly ascended to the role of Senior Strategy Engineer in 2011. She went on to hold the post for a decade.

Hannah Schmitz gained popularity among fans after she made a winning call at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix. After a late safety car, she pitted Verstappen from the lead but he flew back past Lewis Hamilton for the win.

Following the win, Schmitz was invited onto the podium to collect the trophy. Schmitz stated about the breakout moment.

It was an incredibly special moment and the pinnacle of my career. Iโ€™d actually just come back to work after having my first child so that was quite a big thing for me, to prove I was still here and could do the job well. It was just an incredible experience.

That particular win, along with making other consistently accurate calls, earned Schmitz another promotion 18 months later, to her current role as Principal Strategy Engineer.

She has already proved that she deserves the position, having helped scheme the downfall of two F1 giants.

Besting The Best

Under Hannah Schmitzโ€™s leadership Red Bull have consistently managed to outfox Mercedes during the 2021 F1 season. Mercedes are famously known for their race-winning strategy themselves.

The 2021 season culminated with the controversial but tactically flawless Abu Dhabi showdown, in which Verstappenโ€˜s switch to softs behind the safety car helped gift him the win.

Preceding this, they adopted an aggressive strategy at the US Grand Prix to fight off the Black Arrows. Schmitz also juggled both cars at the French Grand Prix to give the Dutchman another victory.

Ferrari are currently underperforming this season and under Schmitz, Red Bull have been able to take advantage of it, punishing the Scuderia side at every turn.

Schmitz’s Impressive leadership at the Monte Carlo Grand Prix

The Monte Carlo Grand Prix was a crowning glory moment for Schmitz. With Charles Leclerc leading the race comfortably, she called in Perez for intermediate tyres on lap 17, and Verstappen a lap later.

The quick decision proved successful as Ferrari brought in Leclerc only a lap later, and by then Schmitz had double-stacked the Red Bulls on Lap 22. Perez took a lead that heโ€™d never relinquish, whilst Verstappen also jumped his expletive-laden title rival.

The Hungarian Grand Prix was an exceptionally more impressive feat, as Schmitz helped Verstappen recover from 10th on the grid to win.

A late startline switch to soft rubber helped Verstappen rise up to fifth place. In the meantime, Leclerc struggled with the hard tyre, twice losing the lead to Verstappen who was on his second set of mediums, took the win, and put the championship further out of reach.

Schmitzโ€™s Secret To Success

Following much praise from Verstappen, Schmitz also stressed the importance of staying calm on the pitwall.
