Gladys Pearl Monroe was born in Mexico to Della Mae Monroe and Otis Elmer Monroe. Otis worked for the National Railway and wanted to be a painter. Gladys’s first husband was Jasper Newton Baker. They had two children together: Robert Kermit “Jackie” Baker, who lived from 1918 to 1933, and Berniece Inez Gladys. After being hurt by him many times, she finally left him in 1921. Baker took her sons away and brought them up in Kentucky.
Gladys later married Martin Edward Mortensen, but they got a divorce after she met Monroe’s real father, Charles Stanley Gifford, at RKO Pictures, where she was working.
