American football coach Giff Smith was born on October 12, 1968, in Mableton, Georgia, U.S., and currently serves as the Los Angeles Chargers NFL outside linebackers coach and acting head coach in the interim.

A look at Giff Smith’s career

Giff Smith was previously the Buffalo Bills’ and Tennessee Titans’ assistant coach. At Georgia Southern University, he was a three-time All-American defensive end.

Talking about his coaching career, In 1991, Smith started working as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Arkansas. After that, he worked at the University of Georgia from 1994 to 1995 as a graduate assistant.

Smith was brought on as Georgia Southern University’s wide receivers coach in 1996. Smith began working at Tulane University as the defensive line coach in 1999. He was appointed to Georgia Tech’s defensive line coaching staff in 2004.

Under head coach Chan Gailey, Smith joined the Buffalo Bills in 2010 as their defensive line coach. On December 31, 2012, he was fired along with every coach in the Bills organisation. As defensive line coach under head coach Ken Whisenhunt, he was hired by the Tennessee Titans in 2014 and in 2016 he joined the San Diego Chargers as their defensive lineman coach and a year later, in 2017, he went to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Smith is a 32-year coaching veteran and has been with the Chargers since 2016 and in 12 NFL seasons as a defensive line and outside linebackers coach for the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, and Chargers, Smith has coached five players to a combined 10 Pro Bowl selections — including Khalil Mack (2022) and Joey Bosa (2017, 2019-21).

This season, Smith’s outside linebacking corps has recorded 26.5 of the team’s 44 sacks, including Mack’s NFL-high 15 sacks and while his salary isn’t known, Brandon was paid $4 million per year.
