In his fifteen-year senior career, he was a player for the Spanish clubs Atletico Madrid and Ferro Carril Oeste, as well as River Plate and Mallorca. From the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, he represented Argentina internationally. He presently works as a manager.
Talking about his international career, over a seven-year period, Burgos won 35 caps for Argentina. Backing up Carlos Roa in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and Pablo Cavallero in the 2002 edition, he was the backup choice in both competitions.
Beginning in the second half of the 2002 World Cup qualification campaign, Burgos replaced Roberto Bonano as the starting player.
Following his retirement, Burgos served as assistant coach for a number of teams managed by his fellow countryman Diego Simeone, most notably Atletico Madrid, which they signed in 2011. In April 2014, while playing Getafe CF, Burgos made history as the world’s first coach to employ Google Glass in a professional match.
During Atletico’s 4–2 victory over Real Madrid in the 2018 UEFA Super Cup in Estonia, Burgos took control once more while Simeone was still suspended. On March 14, 2021, Burgos agreed to a deal with Newell’s Old Boys, which included a one-year option to extend. This was Burgos’ first job as a head coach in the professional ranks.
At the head of Aris Thessaloniki F.C. in the Super League Greece, Burgos took over from Akis Mantzios on February 22, 2022.
