Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah is the Pakistan Chief of Army Staff who was born in Rawalpindi in 1968. Over the years, Munir has risen through the ranks, holding key roles in the Pakistani military, including commanding a battalion and leading corps-level units. Munir made history back on 29 November 2022, when he assumed command as the Chief of Army Staff. He succeeded General Qamar Javed Bajwa, and he is widely regarded for his discipline and operational experience in high-altitude warfare. Munir generally adopts a no-nonsense approach to internal and external threats.

Religion and caste
General Asim Munir is a devout Muslim and has reportedly completed his memorization of the Quran (Hafiz-e-Quran). He belongs to the Syed caste, which is the lineage that follows Islamic teachings with deep personal conviction.
Education
Munir holds an MPhil in Public Policy and Strategic Security Management from the National Defence University (NDU) in Islamabad. He has undergone training at the JGSDF Fuji School in Japan, the Malaysian Armed Forces Defence College (MAFDC) as well as at the Command and Staff College in Quetta.
Military Career
General Asim Munir began his military journey back in 1986 when he joined the 17th Officers Training Course at the Officers Training School (OTS) in Mangla. Munir was first commissioned into the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment. As a young officer, he served as Brigade Major and General Staff Officer-II in several infantry brigades. Later, he attained the rank of Colonel, where he commanded his unit and attained the level of Major General serving as the Force Commander of the Northern Areas (FCNA).
Later in December 2016, General Asim Munir was appointed as the Director-General of Military Intelligence and then served a controversial tenure as Director-General of ISI from October 2018 to June 2019. Munir then went on to command the XXX Corps (2019-2021) and served as Quartermaster General before eventually taking charge as the Army Chief. Notably, Munir is the only Pakistani COAS to have held both the DGMI and DG ISI positions. Moreover, he has notably earned the prestigious Sword of Honor at OTS Mangla.

General Asim Munir is currently married to his wife, Syeda Irum Asim. The couple has three children together, and despite his high-profile position, Munir maintains a relatively private family life. Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah was born in Rawalpindi and his father, Syed Sarwar Munir’s family had migrated from Jalandhar after the partition.
Army Chief Asim Munir’s maternal uncle Syed Babar Ali Shah almost become the king of Islamabad and is playing a role in all important appointments and promotions in the country. Munir’s cousin Hajra Sohail was the scholarship manager at the government organization Pakistan Education Endowment Fund (PEEF) at the time of her appointment in November 2022 and when the Ministry of Education started a process to appoint the CEO of PEEF after Munir became the chief, the Prime Minister’s Office stopped it.
Within a few months of this, she became the CEO. Munir is also believed to have had an influence on Mohsin Naqvi’s becoming the chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board and the Home Minister as Mohsin is a close relative of Asim’s wife Iram. Mohsin Naqvi was made the Chief Minister of Punjab just 55 days after General Munir became the Army Chief and was also elevated to the post of PCB head.
His family is of Punjabi Syed descent and had migrated from Jalandhar, India, after India’s Partition in 1947 and his father, Syed Sarwar Munir, was a school principal at FG Technical High School, Lalkurti in Rawalpindi. Asim’s net worth stands at $1 million.
Controversies
General Asim Munir has been embroiled in various controversies throughout his career. He once got removed from the ISI post after he uncovered sensitive corruption evidence linked to then-Prime Minister Imran Khan and his inner circle. Most recently, Munir sparked backlash in April 2025, during a public speech advocating the two-nation theory, emphasizing religious differences between Muslims and Hindus.
Around the same time, Asim Munir, along with senior military figures, reportedly fled Pakistan amidst rising tensions with India. The tensions came as a result of a deadly terror attack in Kashmir. Despite the controversies, Munir remains a key figure and well-respected individual in the Pakistani military ranks.
