Gal Luft, an Israeli academic who had been reported missing, is now being wanted by the US government on suspicion of trafficking in weapons.

The information was revealed on Wednesday, 26 April and The Jerusalem Post reports that Luft was detained at Cyprus’ Larnaca International Airport on suspicion of participating in a criminal arms trade involving China and Libya. After being granted bail by a Larnaca court, Luft disappeared after being originally scheduled for extradition to the United States.

Gal Luft was officially listed as a wanted person on March 28 after he failed to show up at a Paphos police station. Later, he denied the allegations that he was a weapons dealer on Twitter, claiming that they had been made up by the US government as part of a bigger plot.

Moreover, Luft said that because of his open criticism of American foreign policy, he is being targeted. On Twitter, he wrote,

Who is Gal Luft?

Gal Luft is a well-known American-Israeli think-tank director, author, and professor. He has been in the news because he is wanted by the US government on suspicion of trafficking in weapons.

He was born on 26 May 1966 in Haifa, Israel. He is an alumnus of The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University.

He is currently 57 years old.

His career

Gal Luft, who cofounded the Set America Free Coalition and served as a lieutenant colonel in the Israel Defense Forces, is the executive director of the Center for the Study of Global Security.

On 17 February 2023, he was taken into custody in Cyprus according to a warrant issued by Interpol for a suspect suspected of trafficking in weapons. He left the country and went into hiding after posting bail.

The Justice Department unsealed an indictment from November 2022 on 10 July 2023 charging Gal Luft with eight counts, including breaking trade restrictions against Iran and serving as an unregistered agent of the Chinese government.

One of the allegations in the indictment is that Luft, acting at the behest of the Chinese government, engaged and paid a Donald Trump aide who must remain nameless when he was campaigning for president in order to help China.
