Nico Iamaleava, born Nicholaus Iamaleava Jr., is a young and upcoming top college football star who was born in 2005. He is currently 19 years old and plays as a quarterback for the Tennessee Volunteers in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Nico hails from Long Beach, California, and he has quickly built a name for himself as a dynamic dual-threat quarterback. Nico comes from a very supportive family with Polynesian roots. He is the son of Nicholaus Iamaleava and Marleinna Iamaleava. He has seven other siblings and shares a close bond with his mother, Marleinna. Back on September 8, 2023, Nico Iamaleava announced the establishment of the Nico8 Foundation on Instagram along with his mother. According to the foundation’s official Instagram account bio, the Nico8 Foundation is a non-profit organization created to support breast cancer research. Nico has seven siblings, McKennah, Madden, Matt, Mallory, Nicaylah, Ellie, and Nori Iamaleava. The Bruins previously held a commitment from Iamaleava’s younger brother, quarterback Madden, before he flipped to Arkansas in December.
Nico made news in 2022 when he signed a 4 year deal worth $8 million with Spyre Sports Group, the NIL collective for Tennessee. Iamaleava, who started 13 games for the College Football Playoff-going Tennessee Volunteers last season, decided to skip the school’s spring practice and effectively hold out while trying to negotiate for more money just last week and was set to make somewhere around $2.2 million, but reportedly wanted closer to $4 million. When Tennessee didn’t give him more, he entered the transfer.
Education
Iamaleava attended Warren High School in Downey, California, during his childhood before later committing to the University of Tennessee. Aside from continuing his academics there, he also joined their football program in 2023.
Career and achievements
Nico Iamaleava started out his football career at Warren High School, where he established himself as one of the top quarterback prospects in the country. Back in 2022, he was named as the Polynesian High School Player of the Year. He started out his college career with the Tennessee Volunteers in 2023, and just one year later, he became the first redshirt freshman to lead Tennessee to 10 regular-season wins. Nico has since established himself as a standout player in the SEC and led the Volunteers in the 2024 Citrus Bowl.
