She is the first female figure skater to win the world championship three times in a row since American Peggy Fleming did so in 1966 and 1968.
Kaori Sakamoto was born on April 9, 2000 in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan to Kyoko and Rei Sakamoto. Sakamoto graduated from the Kobe Gakuin University in September 2023. Sakamoto’s journey began on November 18, 2003, in Kobe, where she started learning to skate. Under the guidance of her coaches Sonoko Nakano, Mitsuko Graham, and Sei Kawahara, she quickly rose through the ranks. In her junior career, she won the gold at the 2012–13 Japan Novice Championships and later showcased her skills at the 2013 World Team Trophy.
Moving into senior competition, Sakamoto continued to shine. She started her full senior season by winning the 2017 Asian Figure Skating Trophy. Her senior Grand Prix debut saw her finish 5th at the 2017 Rostelecom Cup and 2nd at the 2017 Skate America, where she won the silver medal.

Sakamoto’s success continued on the international stage. She won the silver at the 2018 Winter Olympics in the team event. At the 2018 Four Continents Championships, she secured another silver. However, it was at the World Championships where she truly made history, winning three consecutive titles from 2022 to 2024.
