Amidst a persistent s*xual abuse crisis that has damaged his term, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby abruptly resigned.

Justin Welby, the leader of the Church of England and the spiritual leader of the global Anglican Communion, resigned after an independent investigation found that he had neglected to notify the authorities about persistent abuse by a volunteer at Christian camps.

In Hammersmith, London, on January 6, 1956, Justin Welby was born in Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital to Jane Gillian Portal. Welby was educated at St Peter’s School, Seaford, between 1964 and 1968, and later at Eton College.

Welby grew up believing whisky salesman Gavin Welby to be his father.

It emerged in 2016 that Gavin Welby was not the Archbishopโ€™s biological father, who was revealed to be the illegitimate son of Sir Anthony Montague Browne, the last private secretary of Winston Churchill after a DNA test.

Leaving everything to her only child, Justin received ยฃ2,426,242.97 from his mumโ€™s estate. He madeย ยฃ85,000 a year in his role as head of the Anglican church.

He continued his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, where his great-uncle, Rab Butler, was the Master. Welby graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and law and, according to custom, was later promoted to Master of Arts by seniority.

Justin Welby career

Known for his attempts to settle disputes, especially in Africa, Justin Welby was the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury. He worked in the oil industry before being ordained in 1992, and he later had positions in the Middle East and Africa. Although church beliefs on topics like LGBT rights and the role of women caused division among Anglican leaders, Welby has attempted to unite the Anglican Communion since taking office as Archbishop in 2013.

John Smyth targeted over 100 boys and young men at Christian camps in the UK, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, subjecting them to physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, according to a thorough study published last week.

When Welby discovered Smyth’s abuses in 2013, not long after he was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, the study found that he failed to notify authorities. According to the research, some abuse incidents might have been avoided if Welby had taken action sooner.

Welby first refused to resign, claiming he was informed that authorities were already aware of the problem and that additional intervention was not necessary.

During his time as Archbishop, Welby presided over several significant occasions, such as the coronation of Charles III and Camilla, the funeral of Elizabeth II, and the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

He also oversaw the ordination of the first female bishop in the Church of England and the acceptance of blessings for same-s*x couples. In Anglicanism, his theology is regarded as embodying the “open evangelical” tradition.
