The Freedom flotilla headed for Gaza was halted by Israel, which stopped the activists from getting to the blockaded Palestinian region to deliver humanitarian aid. To transport aid to Gaza, the Madleen flying under the UK flag sailed from the port of Catania, Sicily, on June 1. Rima Hassan, a French-Palestinian member of the European Parliament, is one of the passengers on board alongside Greta Thunberg and others.

33-year-old Rima Hassan was born on April 28, 1992, in the Neirab camp in Aleppo, Syria.

Rima Hassan was born in Aleppo, Syria in a Muslim family and moved to France at the age of nine and she and her family settled in the town of Niort, where she grew up and later became a French citizen. She is currently single and unmarried.

Rima was the youngest of six children. Her father, Ahmad, is a former mechanic in the Syrian Air Force, and her mother, Nabiha (1958–2021), was a teacher.

Her maternal grandmother was from a well-known Syrian Kurdish family, the Hananu, and she married a Palestinian refugee from Salfit. Because her distinguished position conflicted with his status as a Palestinian communist refugee, she decided to abandon her heritage and live in the refugee camp with him.

Shortly after Hassan was born, her mother fled the camp due to her parents’ terrible marriage and managed to travel to France, where she reconnected with one of her sisters.

After that, she tried for eight years to get custody of her kids again and move them to France. After her mother eventually regained custody, Hassan travelled to France when she was about nine years old.
