The staff and physicians at the SKIMS enthusiastically welcomed Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Ganie. Dr. Ganie was appointed around half a year after applications for the position were invited in December of last year, shortly before Dr. Pervaiz Kaul retired.
Following the Health & Medical Education (H&ME) Department’s invitation to apply for the post last year, some thirty prominent doctors—both from inside and outside the institute applied.

Dr. Ganie was chosen for the position by the Selection Committee after reviewing the biodata and other documents of the contenders.
Dr. Ashraf Ganie expressed his sincere gratitude to the Governing Body and all individuals engaged in the selection process for their trust and confidence in him during his first speech to the SKIMS community as Director.
He made clear that he was dedicated to raising the bar for academic standards, research, and patient care at the institution. With a focus on accessibility and public relations, he presented his plan to establish SKIMS as a competitive player in the global healthcare arena.
He said “As I assume the charge of Director at SKIMS, I stand committed to fostering a future where SKIMS emerges as a global leader in healthcare excellence. My vision is rooted in enhancing patient care, advancing research frontiers, and elevating academic standards… we will prioritize administrative efficiency and transparency.”
Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Ganie has been named as the director of the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Soura Srinagar, effective immediately.
Professor Mohd Ashraf Ganie is best known for his important work in the fields of endocrinology and metabolic disorders. Following his tenure as an Associate Professor in the Endocrinology Department at AIIMS New Delhi.
Mohd Ashraf Ganie joined SKIMS in 2013 as a Professor of Endocrinology. Prof. Ganie has devoted his professional life to improving the knowledge and treatment of clinical practice and research.
His groundbreaking work on endocrine illnesses, with a particular emphasis on diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, and metabolic syndromes, has been greatly appreciated. In addition to adding to the body of knowledge within science, his work has had a direct impact on patient care by advancing both diagnostic and treatment approaches.
Professor Ganie has received recognition and honors from colleagues and professional organizations all around the world as a result of his research being widely published in esteemed medical journals. As a mentor and educator, he has mentored many medical students, residents, and fellows, encouraging the upcoming generation of medical professionals. His dedication to teaching is obvious in these responsibilities.
He has led numerous national and international research programs, serving as chief coordinator of the National PCOS Task Force program, Principal Investigator for GenomeIndia, recently launched by DBT New Delhi, Government of India, National INDIAB Study, etc.

Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Ganie’s educational background
Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Ganie completed his MBBS from the Government Medical College, Srinagar in 1993. In 1998, he completed his MD at SKIMS. In 2003, he completed his DM from AIIMS, New Delhi.
He has been published in over 130 national and international journals and reviews numerous peer-reviewed journals. He has almost 15 funded studies under his belt.
