After being pulled over for breaking traffic laws, the FedEx driver and the police officers exchanged harsh words.
Shelby County law enforcement officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith were arrested and charged with second-degree murder and other associated offences. Nichols was pronounced dead on January 11 from injuries sustained in an altercation that took place on January 7.

Ex-Memphis police officer Emmitt Martin III is being tried for second-degree murder in the shooting death of Tyre Nichols. He joined the Memphis Police Department in March of 2018, where he worked with the Scorpion Unit. Formally known as the Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhood, to reduce street violence.
The 30-year-old black man represented by Bill Massey has been charged with official oppression, aggravated kidnapping with a weapon, aggravated assault while acting in concert, official misconduct through unauthorised exercise of official power, two counts of aggravated kidnapping causing bodily injury, and two counts of official misconduct through failure to perform a duty imposed by law. Along with co-defendants Justin Smith and Desmond Mills Jr., he was just granted freedom from Shelby County Jail on a $250,000 bail.
Nichols’ mother, RowVaughn Wells, claimed that her son had been “beaten like a piñata.” Police body cam footage of the incident will be released by the authorities at 7 p.m. EST on Friday, January 27, prompting fears of violent protests.

Tyre Nichols could be seen shouting out for mom
The late Friday release of the footage by the city of Memphis, Tennessee, shows numerous police officers kicking and hitting Tyre Nichols. A 29-year-old Black man who subsequently died. Beating him with a baton at one point, despite the fact that he shows no evidence of resisting back.
A few seconds later, when Nichols rises up, the officer who had been holding his hands behind his back strikes him with at least five hard punches. One scene shows police officers surrounding Tyre Nichols as he lies on the ground yelling, “Mom, Mom, Mom.” His attorneys said his mother lived 100 yards from where he was abused.
Family attorney Tony Romanucci said his clients want the Memphis Police Department to abolish the elite street crimes unit. Which are officers who are assigned to in an effort to reduce the city’s rising crime rate.
