On February 17, 1988, Vasyl Lomachenko was born in Ukraine. Vasyl received early training from his father who is famous boxing coach named Anatoly Lomachenko. Vasyl’s boxing career was greatly influenced by Anatoly.
Interestingly, American boxing promoter Bob Arum disclosed in 2017 that Vasyl had to learn traditional Ukrainian dancing before being permitted to train for boxing. Vasyl had outstanding success as an amateur, winning 396 of 397 games before going professional.
Lomachenko took home the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He won his first senior gold medal by defeating his five opponents by an incredible 45-point margin, outscoring them 58–13. After that, he received the Val Barker Trophy and was crowned the tournament’s best boxer. He also won gold again that year, and at the European Championships in Liverpool, he was crowned continental champion.
At the Milan World Championships in 2009, he took home the gold. Subsequently, when AIBA eliminated the featherweight division, he participated as a lightweight at the 2011 World Championships in Baku. There, he captured his second gold medal in a row, making him the world champion in two weight classes.
