The accident which claimed the life of Ebrahim Raisi happened close to Jolfa, which is a city on the Iranian border with Azerbaijan, around 600 kilometres (375 miles) northwest of Tehran, the capital of Iran. According to reports, President Raisi was on his way back from a trip to nearby Azerbaijan.
The chopper carried nine people, according to the local media. These were Mohammad Ali Alehashem, the Imam of Tabriz’s Friday prayers, Malek Rahmati, the governor of the province of Eastern Azerbaijan, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, a pilot, a copilot, the director of security, and an extra bodyguard.

Ebrahim Raisi was born on December 14, 1960 into a clerical family. At the age of five, Seyed Haji, his father, passed away. Raisi was related to Ali ibn Husayn Zayn al-Abidin Sayyids and belonged to the Husayn ibn Ali (Hussaini) Sayyid family in the past. He got married to Jamileh Alamolhoda in 1983 and they were parents to two daughters.
Jameleh was president of the Shahid Beheshti University’s Institute of Fundamental Studies of Science and Technology in addition to being an associate professor there.
After graduating from “Javadiyeh school” for his elementary education, Raisi enrolled in the Hawza, an Islamic seminary. He attended “Ayatollah Boroujerdi School” in 1975 in order to complete his studies at Qom Seminary.
In 1975 he attended a seminary in Qom, the foremost intellectual center of Shiʿi Islam, and studied under some of Iran’s most prominent clerics. Raisi, who wore a black turban identifying him in Shia tradition as a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad.

Ebrahim Raisi began his career by working with Iranian judiciary. From 1989 to 1994, he was Tehran’s General Prosecutor. He was employed by the government in 1994 at the General Inspection Office. He lost the 2017 presidential election to Hassan Rouhani.
In 2021, Raisi was re-elected with almost 62 percent of the 28.9 million ballots cast. Iran’s investigative system prevented all of his possible significant opponents from running in this election. The turnout for the election was the lowest in Iranian history.
On August 3, 2021, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei signed a proclamation appointing Raisi as president of Iran. In his inaugural address, Raisi said that while his administration would work to remove the sanctions placed on Iran by the US, it would not allow outsiders to control its economic policies.
