Draupadi Murmu, a tribal leader from Odisha, was picked as the ruling NDA’s presidential candidate by the BJP’s parliamentary board on Tuesday. J P Nadda, the BJP’s president, announced at a press conference following the party’s top brass meeting.

If elected, Murmu, a former governor of Jharkhand, will be the first tribal woman to hold the highest constitutional position, which is a strong possibility given the BJP-led NDA’s numerical advantage. She would be the country’s firstย president from the state of Odishaย if elected.

Yashwant Sinha had previously been identified as the opposition’s joint contender for the seat. The poll will be held on July 18th.

Shyam Charan Murmu is her husband who died oiwng to a cardiac arrest while one of her son passed away in 2009. She has a doctor named Itishri who works in the bank while her father was named Biranchi Narayan Tudu.

Murmu, who was born on June 20, 1958 and is aged 64, was the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. Murmu, who hails from the Mayurbhanj area of Odisha and comes from a tribal family, completed her studies despite adversity. She graduated from Ramadevi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar with a bachelor’s degree in arts. She worked for free at a Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Rairangpur before entering politics in Odisha. In 1997, she ran for and won the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat councillor position.

Murmu then went on to become the deputy president of the BJP’s Scheduled Tribes Morcha. In 2000 and 2009, she was elected to the Rairangpur Legislative Assembly on a BJP ticket from Mayurbhaj’s Rairangpur. She is a Hindu by religion.

Throughout her political career, she has held several crucial roles within the party.

From 2013 to 2015, Murmu served as the national executive of the saffron party’s ST Morcha. She has worked in numerous ministries in Odisha, including transportation and commerce, as well as various departments such as fisheries and animal husbandry.

Mrs Itishree Murmu is Murmu’s daughter from his marriage to Ganesh Ch Hembram. When President Pranab Mukherjee’s term was coming to an end, Murmu’s name was floating about as one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s top possibilities.
