Law enforcement has filed a case of unnatural death and is exploring allegations related to dowry issues.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George has directed the Director of the Women and Child Development Department to conduct a comprehensive investigation and submit a detailed report.
Shahana Committed Suicide
According to the police, Shahana, a 26-year-old postgraduate doctor in the surgery department, took her own life by administering a lethal dose of an anesthetic drug. A suicide note was recovered, wherein she expressed her frustration, stating, “Everybody wants money only.”
Shahana’s family contends that her depression stemmed from the collapse of her marriage proposal due to exorbitant dowry demands.
Groom Demanded Dowry
The prospective groom, Dr. Ruwise E A, former state president of the Medical PG Association, purportedly insisted on 150 sovereigns of gold, 15 acres of land, and a BMW car as dowry.
Initially agreeing to provide 50 sovereigns of gold, property worth Rs 50 lakh, and a car, Shahana’s family faced refusal from the groom’s side, leading to the breakdown of the marriage. After Shahana failed to report for her night duty on Monday and remained unreachable, her friends visited her apartment to find the door locked from the inside.
Police Investigation
The police investigation is ongoing, with statements from the deceased’s relatives being recorded. In response to the charges against him, the Medical PG Doctors Association has relieved Dr. Ruwise E A of all responsibilities.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Kerala Women’s Commission, Sathidevi, along with other panel members, visited Shahana’s family, urging a thorough investigation.
Shahana, the daughter of the late Abdul Aziz and Jameela of Naz Mansil, Maitri Nagar, Venjaramoodu, is mourned by her community. In a recent development, the police have taken Dr. Ruwise into custody in connection with the death of Dr. Shahana.
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Shahana. May her departed soul rest in peace!
