Dominique Pelicot drugged the victim, his ex-wife r*ped her, and let other men r*pe her while she was comatose for almost ten years. Dominique who has now been found guilty is housed in one of France’s most notorious prisons, Les Baumettes in Marseilles.

Pelicot’s defence lawyer was Beatrice Zavarro with his trial running for four months.

Over a period of nine years, from July 2011 to October 2020, Dominique Pelicot, a man from Mazan in south-eastern France, repeatedly drugged his wife, r*ped her, and invited strangers to r*pe her while she was unconscious with Gisele r*ped 92 times by 72 men while her husband filmed them. The crimes were discovered in September 2020 with the trial taking place in Avignon.

Roger Arata, the chief judge of the court in Avignon, delivered down findings against Dominique Pelicot and the other fifty men who were tried in the case that shocked France.

Age 72 Pelicot who was a real estate agent and is a retired electrician and construction supplier was instructed by Arata to stand for the sentencing. Dominique Pelicot sat back down and sobbed as the 20-year prison sentence was announced. The 72-year-old might be imprisoned for the rest of his life. Protest marches in support of Gisele have been held all throughout France in response to the trial. He had married his ex-wife Gisele back in 1973.

The couple’s daughter, who uses the pen name Caroline Darian, believes she was also assaulted by her father and the 45 year old had said she had been forgotten during the trial, adding she was convinced that she too had been drugged and s*xually assaulted by her father, like her mother.

“The only difference between her and me is the lack of evidence concerning me. For me, it’s an absolute tragedy”, said Ms Darian, who in 2022 wrote a book Et J’ai cesse de t’appeler Papa (And I stopped calling you dad).

Caroline Darian who is the middle daughter has a 50-year-old brother named David Pelicot, the eldest sibling who had said that for him it was “the trial of a whole family, which has been totally destroyed”.

The family lived in their house in the small town of Mazan.

Dominique’s children are David and youngest daughter Florian Pelicot and their sister Caroline Darian. During his trial, Dominique Pelicot praised his now-ex-wife’s bravery while confessing to recruiting dozens of strangers to rape his highly drugged wife.

Dominique Pelicot’s children feel that the guilty men in the case received too little of a punishment.

“I would like to start by hailing the courage of my ex-wife” Gisele Pelicot. I regret what I did, making (my family) suffer… I ask them for forgiveness,” he said, asking the family to “accept my apologies”, Dominique Pelicot said in his final statement to the court.

When Dominque Pelicot was arrested in 2020 for a separate upskirting offense at a supermarket, the gruseome case and crime he had done was discovered.

Then, according to Reuters, police found over 20,000 images and films on his computer disks, exposing the terrible secrets he had kept for ten years from his now-ex-wife.

Other cases involving Dominique Pelicot

The Guardian claims that in the summer of 2010, ten years prior to Dominique Pelicot’s arrest for upskirting at the Carpentras supermarket, he was discovered using a tiny camera concealed in a pen to record women’s clothing in a supermarket in the Seine-et-Marne neighborhood east of Paris. However, in order to avoid going to court, he was fined €100 after his arrest.

Police discovered that Dominique’s DNA collection matched a blood sample discovered on a shoe at the scene of a 1999 attempted r*pe of a young estate agent outside of Paris when they entered it into a national database. Dominique, who was 46 at the time, had been an estate agent himself.

More than 20 years before the rapes for which he has now been sentenced – in 1999 – Pelicot is accused of assaulting and attempting to rape a 23-year-old estate agent, known by the pseudonym Marion, in the suburbs of Paris. She fought the attacker off.

He eventually admitted to being present at the scene in 2021 after DNA – a spot of blood on the victim’s shoe – was finally found to match Pelicot’s. But he continues to deny he attempted to rape her and the investigation continues.

“Once he was told that his DNA was found at the crime scene, he said ‘Yes, it’s me,'” Ms Rault remembered.

And that discovery quickly led to a link to an even older cold case. In 1991, another young estate agent, Sophie Narme, had been raped and murdered. Although crucial DNA evidence had gone missing, the similarities between the scenes were so striking that Pelicot is under investigation for the crime, which he denies. The search for other potential links to older crimes is also ongoing.
