Know what action was executed against the officials by PGMOL, who were responsible for wrongly disallowing the goal of Luis Diaz during Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool.

When the score was tied at 0-0 and Liverpool was reduced to 10 players, winger Diaz’s goal was initially ruled out on the pitch. Following a brief VAR review, England upheld this decision, although the customary offside line graphic was absent from the process. Although the proper protocol was adhered to in making this controversial call, the decision was ultimately attributed to a human error.

Why PGMOL issued an apology statement after Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool?

On Saturday, the EPL game featuring Liverpool vs. Tottenham ended 2-1 in favor of the North London team and following this game, PGMOL, responsible for officiating, acknowledged a significant human error that resulted in the incorrect disallowance of Luis Diaz’s goal in the 34th minute. Prior to this moment, Liverpool had already experienced setbacks with Curtis Jones being sent off for a foul on Yves Bissouma.

Later in the second-half, Diogo Jota received two quick successive yellow cards and hence, he was dismissed from the field. Despite playing with only nine players on the field, Liverpool tenaciously thwarted all Tottenham attacks. However, an unfortunate own-goal in the 96 minute by Joel Matip meant that Tottenham secured all three points.

How PGMOL actioned against responsible officials?

The disallowed goal by Diaz was the result of a communication breakdown between VAR official Darren England and assistant VAR Dan Cook, leading on-field referee Simon Hooper to incorrectly rule it offside despite clear evidence that the Colombia international was onside before scoring. As per official statement by PGMOL, the two officials have been relieved of their duties starting from game week seven.

In the upcoming matches, England won’t serve as the fourth official when Brentford plays against Nottingham Forest, and Cook won’t act as the assistant referee in the west London derby between Fulham and Chelsea on Monday. Craig Pawson will now take on England’s role as the fourth official at City Ground, while Eddie Smart will assume Cook’s responsibilities as the assistant referee at Craven Cottage.

On Saturday, PGMOL announced a comprehensive review of the incident involving Diaz’s disallowed goal. Klopp expressed his dissatisfaction with the PGMOL statement, stating that it provided no assistance. He also pointed out the previous apology that Wolves had received for the non-penalty decision during their match against Manchester United earlier in the season.
