Mumbai now appears to have found Nehal Wadhera, another outstanding southpaw, for the 2023 season.
Wadhera joined the batting order at No. 6 on Sunday with Mumbai Indians reeling at 48 for four against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
He hit a four off the first ball he faced, a gentle steer past the slips with an open face of the bat off Michael Bracewell.
Using back-to-back sixes, Wadhera laid into Karn Sharma after Tilak at the other end had helped to steady the ship. After initially rocking back and pulling one over deep midwicket, Karn pitched the subsequent ball up fuller, and Wadhera tonked him for an enormous maximum of 101 metres over long-on.
However, the 35-year-old leg spinner prevailed as Virat Kohli at long-on collected Wadhera’s big shot after he tried another one.
Wadhera returned for a 13-ball 21 and gave Mumbai’s innings some stability after putting together a 50-run combination with Tilak off 30 deliveries.

Wadhera, a 22-year-old, feels as though this is a special event. He was bought at the IPL 2023 auction for his basic price of Rs. 20 lakh in December and made his Ranji Trophy debut earlier this year in January, scoring 123 runs against Gujarat.
He then shocked Madhya Pradesh, the current winner, with a stunning 214. Similar to this, in his debut for the Indian U-19 team, Wadhera struck 81 against Sri Lanka.
The fact that this was the Punjab batter’s first senior-level white-ball match belied his ability to unleash his shots under pressure after losing early wickets.
Wadhera, often referred to as the “new-age Yuvraj Singh,” will be looking to have a good IPL debut season to show off his talent.

The first exhibition of Nehal Wadhera’s talent came in the 2018 U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy, where he smashed six fifties and further examples of his promise with the bat came on his U-19 India debut against Sri Lanka (81) and in the semis of a 2022 Punjab State Inter-district tournament (578 vs Bathinda U-23). As if to celebrate him being picked up at the 2023 IPL Auction, the Punjab boy notched a century (123) on his Ranji debut against Gujarat and would follow it up with a double-ton (214) a couple of games later vs Madhya Pradesh in the 2022-2023 season.
