The American Statistical Association described CR Rao as “a living legend” for his influence in economics, genetics, national planning, demography, anthropology, geology, biometry, and medicine.
The Times of India listed CR Rao in the list of 10 best Indian scientists. CR Rao has been awarded with the International Prize in Statistics, an award equivalent to Nobel Prize in 2023.
Rao has received this award for his contributions to statistics as well as medical research fields.
CR Rao’s family and education
C R Rao is the eighth of ten children born to a Telugu family. Rao hails from Hadagali, Bellary, Madras Presidency, currently in Karnataka, India. CR Rao attended a school Gudur, Nuzvid, in the present state of Andhra Pradesh. Rao further received a degree of MSc in mathematics from Andhra University.
Later he enrolled himself in MA in statistics from Calcutta University in 1943. He got his Ph.D. degree from King’s College. C R got a DSc degree in 1965 from Cambridge University. Indumati is Rao’s wife and they have two kids namely Suchitra and Sanjay. Rao was born to C Doraswamy Naidu and A Laxmikanthamma.
CR Rao career
CR Rao served at the Indian Statistical Institute and later at the Anthropological Museum in Cambridge. He was the head and later the Director of the Research and Training School at the Indian Statistical Institute and he held this position for over 40 years.
CR Rao then further did training programs and he trained numerous leaders in the field of Mathematics. A total of 38 honorary doctoral degrees are completed by C R Rao from universities in 19 countries.
Rao was also the President of the International Statistical Institute, and Institute of Mathematical Statistics in the USA.
