The Varanasi parliamentary area in Uttar Pradesh will participate in the seventh voting phase of the Lok Sabha election 2024 on June 1. The outcome will be announced on June 4.

29-year-old Shyam Rangeela was born on 25 August 1994 in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan to Jwaharlal. Shyam has an elder sister named Durga. He is 5ft 5in tall. Rangeela studied animation.

Shyam Rangeela is renowned for his mimicry abilities, particularly of political figures. He appeared as a comedian on the TV show ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’. He first gained popularity in 2017 when his impersonation of PM Modi became widely known on social media. Since then, he has been creating videos mimicking the PM’s speeches and interviews.

Besides Modi, Rangeela has also impersonated other political figures like Rahul Gandhi. For some time now, Rangeela has been a critic of PM Modi and his policies. In fact, in the video where he announced his candidacy, there were segments where Rangeela mimicked PM Modi’s voice. In his election announcement video on May 1, Rangeela mentioned the BJP’s uncontested win in the Surat constituency and the controversy in the Chandigarh mayoral elections.

Shyam Rangeela entered politics by joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2002. However, he later chose to operate independently, stating that “he is his own master.” In an interview, Rangeela recounted his transition from a supporter of PM Modi to a disillusioned critic, pointing to limitations placed on his comedic work as a turning point.

The Congress has nominated Ajay Rai, the head of its Uttar Pradesh division, for this seat. Rai was the third-place finisher in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, secured the second position in the Varanasi constituency during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Another notable contender is the transgender leader Mahamandaleshwar Hemangi Sakhi, who is also running for this prominent seat in Uttar Pradesh.
