Tania Sachdev is an Indian chess player who was born on August 20, 1986, in Delhi and currently 38-years-old. She currently holds the FIDE titles of International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grandmaster (WGM). Tania is a two-time Indian women’s chess champion, having won it in 2006 and 2007.

Aside from her success in the sport, Tania is also a famous chess presenter and commentator. Her mother, Anju, introduced her to chess at the young age of 6, and she has since become a professional. Tania’s parents provided her with professional training and she achieved her first international title when she was just eight-years-old.

Education

During her childhood, Sachdev attended the Modern School in Vasant Vihar in Delhi and later graduated from Sri Venkateswara College.

Marriage and husband

Tania Sachdev married Delhi-based architect Viraj Kataria back in November 2014.

Career and achievements

Tania Sachdev attained the Woman Grandmaster title in 2005, becoming the eighth Indian player to achieve it. She also went on to win India’s National Women’s Premier Chess Championship in 2006 and 2007. She also won the Women’s Asian Chess Championship in 2007 and just two year later, won the Arjuna Award in 2009. Sachdev also notably won the best woman’s prize at the Reykjavik Open in 2016 as well as the Commonwealth women’s champion title in Kalutara.

Tania Sachdev has been a part of the Indian national team in the Women’s Chess Olympiads ever since 2008. She was part of the team that won the Women’s World Team Chess Championship in both 2009 and 2011. Sachdev has also been a part of the Women’s Asian Team Chess Championship since 2003, helping them win the 2006 Asian Games, and the 2009 Asian Indoor Games.

The 38-year-old also won the individual bronze medal for board 3 back at the 2012 Women’s Chess Olympiad in Istanbul. She has also won four team silver medals and four individual medals at different editions of the Women’s Asian Team Championship. Sachdev also won a silver medal during the Asian Continental Women’s Rapid Chess Championship in 2015.
