Charles Lee has been recently named as the new head coach of the NBA franchise Charlotte Hornets after their long search for the post after yet another season where they missed the playoffs after getting just 21 wins out of 61 and finishing 13th in the Eastern Conference.

He agreed on a four-year contract with the team, as per a report by ESPN. Lee joined the Hornets after being the top assistant coach with the Boston Celtics. His salary hasn’t been revealed yet.

Who is Charles Lee?

Charles Lee is a 39-year-old American former professional basketball player who was born on November 11, 1984, in Washington, D.C., U.S. The 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) tall American was currently working as an assistant to NBA franchise Boston and has now been appointed as the head coach. 

A look at Charles Lee’s career

Thus getting the coveted job of becoming NBA head coach for the first time. Lee has spent the last decade working as an assistant coach in the NBA before his current assistant role for the Celtics.

He worked as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks from 2018 to 2023 and the Atlanta Hawks from 2014 to 2018, where he collaborated with former Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer in both organizations.

However, as the Celtics are currently vying in the playoffs Charles is expected to be introduced by the Hornets once the Boston team end their playoff run

Lee, who was named the Patriot League Player of the Year in 2006, played a crucial role in leading Bucknell to consecutive Patriot League titles and appearances in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Following his graduation from Bucknell in 2006, Lee had a stint with the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA’s summer league and pre-season, but he did not secure a spot on the regular season roster.

He went on to play for teams like Hapoel Gilboa/Afula in Israel, Verviers-Pepinster in Belgium, and MEG Goettingen and Artland Dragons in Germany. 

The Atlanta Hawks revealed on August 20, 2014, that Lee was appointed as an assistant coach under head coach Mike Budenholzer.

He also followed Mike as an assistant coach in Milwaukee in 2018 where he stayed till the end of the 2022 season and it was announced on June 11, 2023, that Lee would become the top assistant coach for the Boston Celtics.

Now the former Spurs player will finally get a chance to showcase his managing skills in a franchise which has struggled over the past 2 decades, especially in playoffs where they’ve not won a single series in 22 years, thus a difficult task lies ahead of him however considering his experience and knowledge of the game he’ll be ready for the task.
