Captain Geetika Koul became the first woman in Indian history to be deployed in Siachen, commonly referred to as the world’s highest battlefield. Indian Army medical officer Captain Koul is a member of the Snow Leopard Brigade. Koul reached this significant milestone after completing the rigorous induction training at the esteemed Siachen Battle School.

In a social media post, the Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army said, “After successfully completing the induction training at Siachen Battle School, Captain Geetika Koul from the Snow Leopard Brigade becomes the first woman medical officer of the Indian Army to be deployed at the world’s highest battlefield, Siachen.”

The Himalayas’ northern region contains Siachen. Though its strategic importance is acknowledged, its severe weather and difficult terrain make even the toughest survivors doubtful. A new base transceiver station (BTS) in the Siachen glacier was put into service by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in October to increase mobile communication for soldiers stationed at elevations over 15,500 feet. Now, soldiers positioned in the coldest and highest battlegrounds at high-altitude stations will have the chance to maintain family relations while performing their tasks.

“Siachen Warriors, in collaboration with BSNL, established the first ever BSNL BTS at forward posts of the highest battlefield on October 6 to extend mobile communication for the soldiers deployed at more than 15,500 feet,” the Fire and Fury Corps announced on X.
