The now-viral post captioned “Thrilled to say I passed my viva with no corrections and am officially PhDone,” features Dr. Ally Louks holding her thesis titled ‘Olfactory Ethics: The Politics of Smell in Modern and Contemporary Prose.’

However, what began as a celebratory moment instantly devolved into a maelstrom of trolling and abuse, largely from right wing critics. Even though, Dr. Ally Louks clarified that her PhD was in English Literature and that “Olfactory Ethics” was the focus of her thesis.

Social Media User’s Reaction

Many accused her work of being overly “woke” or trivial, with some questioning the value of her research. Among the vitriolic comments were statements such as, “You would have spent your years better getting married and having children.”

Another one remarked, “Imagine having a brain this rotted by leftism.” The harassment escalated to severe levels, with one individual sending her threats of s*xual assault, which Dr. Ally Louks reported to the police.

Despite the negativity, online criticism and backlash, Dr. Louks also received significant support from many users. Some condemned the misogynistic and hostile responses, highlighting the disproportionate backlash women face when celebrating their achievements online.

With one such user saying: “This thread should make you wonder if wokeness hasn’t gone far enough.” Another added, “The vitriol is so bleak. Women can’t even share their accomplishments without being harassed by misogynists.”

The controversy has since garnered international attention, with Louks’s post amassing over 117 million views.

Who is Dr. Ally Louks?

As of now, there isn’t much information available about Dr. Ally Louks. However, as per the official LinkedIn profile of Dr. Louks, she has completed a bachelor’s degree from University of Exeter in 2019 with first class distinction.

Later, she went to UCL to earn a Master’s Degree in English Literature and later went to University of Cambridge to pursue her PhD.

Dr Ally Louks, a Cambridge teacher, earned her PhD with a dissertation on the ‘Olfactory Ethics: The Politics of Smell in Modern and Contemporary Prose’.  Although her DOB isn’t known, she is aged between 30-40 years.

Dr Ally Louks is now a supervisor in English Literature at the University of Cambridge, the same place she did her PhD from. ‘Olfactory Ethics: The Politics of Smell in Modern and Contemporary Prose’ studies how literature registers the importance of olfactory discourse, the language of smell and the olfactory imagination it creates in structuring our social world.
