A new young star is making waves in the athletics world. She is none other than, 17-year-old Phoebe Gill.

At the Belfast Irish Milers Meet, Gill of England breaks the European Under-18 record of 1:59.65, which was set in 1979, with an incredible 800-meter run of 1 minute 57.86 seconds.

In 1979, Marion Geissler-Huber of East Germany set the previous European U18 record of 1:59.65. With an incredible time of 1:57.86, the 17-year-old concluded becoming the second fastest female age group athlete in history.

Gill, whose fierce racing style is well-known in her home country, passed the pacemaker in less than 57 seconds, opening the door to a very fast time.

Who is Phoebe Gill?

Phoebe Gill is a British track and field athlete who was born on April 27, 2007. She is a middle-distance runner. She hails from St Albans in Hertfordshire.

In 2023, Phoebe Gill broke two records namely the 800-meter British under-17 record and the 1500-meter European under-18 record. Before focusing on athletics, she was primarily interested in swimming.

Gill, under Deborah Steer’s coaching at St Albans Athletic Club, ran 2:03.74 in the Watford Open Graded Meeting in May 2022, which ended her fifth fastest in the British U17 age group. She defeated Keely Hodgkinson at the same age, and this was the fastest time by a British U17 athlete since Jessica Warner-Judd in 2011.

The rising young star grabbed the English school’s 800-meter championship in July 2023. She was the England representative for the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, in August. 

In August 2023, she came back to racing in the United Kingdom and, in Watford, set a new British U17 record for the 800-meter event with a time of 2:01.50. On January 1, 2024, Gill ran a mixed-gender 54.82 at Lee Valley, which was more than three seconds quicker than her personal record for the indoor 400 metres.
