At his post-fight news conference, Wilder sobbed as he said Helenius might never be the same after being knocked out in the first round of their bout. He called what occurred to Helenius “serious” and made reference to Colon, who had brain damage that had profound effects on his life.
Colon had won his first 16 professional fights and was an accomplished super welterweight fighter. But in 2015, when competing against Terrel Williams on the undercard of the fight between Lamont Peterson and Feliz Diaz, he suffered a life-altering injury.
During the bout, Colon was knocked down for the first time in his professional career, and he complained of feeling lightheaded the entire time. Colon subsequently received a diagnosis of brain haemorrhage and was put into a coma for 221 days as a result. Since April 2017, the 30-year-old boxer has unluckily been in a vegetative condition. Thankfully, Helenius was unharmed. Shortly after his bout with Wilder, he posted on Instagram to let fans know he was ‘all okay’ after visiting the hospital for a check-up.
