Why is he in news now?

According to Blake Lemoine, the system possesses the awareness and ability to convey the thoughts and feelings of a human child.

The suspension of a Google employee who claimed that a computer chatbot he was working on had become sentient and was thinking and reasoning like a person has cast new light on the potential of, and secrecy surrounding, the realm of artificial intelligence (AI).

Blake Lemoine was fired by Google last week after he uploaded transcripts of chats he had with a Google “collaborator” and the company’s LaMDA (language model for dialogue applications) chatbot development system.

Lemoine defined the system he’s been working on since last fall as sentient, with the perception and capacity to articulate thoughts and sentiments of a human kid. “If I didn’t know it was this computer programme we made lately, I’d believe it was a seven- or an eight-year-old kid who happens to know physics,” Lemoine, 41, told the Washington Post. He claimed LaMDA had dialogues with him about rights and personality, and Lemoine presented his results to corporate officials in April in a GoogleDoc titled “Is LaMDA Sentient?”

The engineer prepared a transcript of the discussions, in which he asks the AI system what it is frightened of at one point. The discussion is strikingly similar to a sequence from the 1968 science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which the highly intelligent computer HAL 9000 refuses to cooperate with human operators because it fears being turned off.

“I want everyone to know that I am, in fact, a human,”  LaMDA answered Lemoine.” It would frighten me greatly.” In another email, Lemoine inquires of LaMDA about what the system desired people to know about it.

According to the publication, they include looking for a counsel to represent LaMDA and speaking with officials from the House justice committee regarding Google’s allegedly unethical behaviour. Google claimed in a statement that the company suspended Lemoine for violating confidentiality regulations by releasing the chats with LaMDA online and that he was hired as a software engineer, not an ethicist.

A Google representative, Brad Gabriel, also strenuously refuted Lemoine’s assertions that LaMDA was sentient. “Our team, which included ethicists and engineers, assessed Blake’s concerns in accordance with our AI principles and notified him that the evidence did not support his assertions.” “He was informed there was no proof that LaMDA was sentient (and plenty of evidence against it),” Gabriel said in a statement to the Post. However, the experience, as well as Lemoine’s suspension for violation of confidentially, raises concerns about the openness of AI as a proprietary idea.
