Rory Finneran bio and age

Rory Finneran is an upcoming Irish footballer who was born on February 29, 2008, and he is currently 16 years old. Finneran currently plays for Blackburn Rovers as a left-footed defensive midfielder. Finneran recently made history by becoming the youngest ever player to play for Blackburn earlier this year, in January. He made his debut for the club in the third round of the FA Cup clash against Cambridge United.

Finneran despite being born in England, has played through Ireland’s youth ranks and is currently the U16 Ireland captain. The Manchester native qualifies for Ireland through his Sligo grandparents.

Rory Finneran has two sisters, Ella and Maeve and his parents are Gerard and Pam. Rory’s late grandparents, Jim and Flo were from Skreen and Templeboy.

Career and stats

Finneran started out his career at Blackburn Rovers when he joined their academy at just eight years old. He eventually started playing for their U-18, and U-21 team before making his senior debut. While playing in the U-18 Premier League, he made 12 appearances, as well as 2 Premier League appearances.

Despite getting his name on the match-day squad for Blackburn in the EFL Championship against Bristol City, back in December 2023, he remained an unused substitute. However, just one month later, he made history by becoming Blackburn’s youngest-ever debutant at just 15 years, 10 months, and eight days.

Meanwhile, for Ireland, Finneran first played for the Ireland U15 team and eventually represented the Ireland U16 and U17 teams. Back in 2023, Finneran was named as the Republic of Ireland’s under-15 player of the year. He also captained Ireland for the first time during a 3-1 victory over the Australian U16s in 2023.

Playing style

Rory Finneran primarily plays as a defensive midfielder, but he can also play at various other positions, including as a centre-back, Central midfielder, Right Back and Centre Forward. He is a very versatile player and rarely makes any mistakes in his passing. He is a complete all-rounder with excellent tackling abilities as well as great vision and passing skills for both long and short passes.  Despite his young age, he already understands the game very well and often helps his team build up from the back.
