George Kurian career
George Kurian joined the Kerala BJP through the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and has spent the last forty years there as an organisation man. Kurian remained with the BJP and put in extra effort to broaden the party’s outreach to minorities, particularly the Christian minority, to which he belongs, despite the challenging political environment in a state where the BJP has not had much success in elections.
In the past, Kurian has held positions as the officer on special duty (OSD) to veteran BJP politician O Rajagopal and national vice-chairman of the National Commission for Minorities during his tenure as a Union Minister in the AB Vajpayee administration.
Due to his fluency in Hindi, he is a well-known face on Keralan television discussions and frequently interprets statements made by central BJP leaders during elections. Despite running from Puthuppally, a Congress bastion, he finished third in the 2016 Assembly elections behind CPI(M) and Congress candidates.
Kurian’s appointment to the Union council is perceived as the BJP’s recognition of the Christian backing the party received in the recently ended elections, particularly in Thrissur, where the party emerged victorious. It will also be viewed as the party’s continued community outreach aimed at bolstering support prior to the state’s 2026 Assembly elections.
