50-year-old Flamini entered the cave on Saturday, 20 November 2021, just three months before Russia invaded Ukraine. She reportedly spent her time exercising, drawing and knitting woolly hats. According to her support team, she got through 60 books and 1,000 litres of water.

Flamini entered the cave located outside Granada in order to learn more about how the human mind and body deals with extreme solitude and deprivation. She was down there with no sense of time, and revealed how she stopped counting days after some 60 days.

Throughout the experiment, a team of scientists from three universities – Almería, Granada, and Murcia monitored her. They kept in touch through special, limited messaging technology. While her team claims that the 50-year-old athlete from Madrid has broken the world record for the longest time a person has spent alone in a cave, it still hasn’t been confirmed as of yet.

As a Spanish TVE station provided footage of Flamini climbing out of the cave blinking and smiling as she embraced well-wishers, she shared:

I’m still stuck on November 21, 2021. I don’t know anything about the world.”

Flamini shares her experiences

Following her exit from the cave, Flamini described her experiences of being cut off from the world as “excellent, unbeatable.” She then excused herself to take a shower, as she had not had one in over 16 months.

She stated:

You are silent and the brain makes it up”.
