Bala Manjunatha Swamiji, 37, and his associate K Abhilash of the Vidhya Chowdeshwari temple near Huliyurdurga were apprehended on Thursday night in a decisive late-night operation headed by Superintendent of Police Ashok KV.

They were detained for their alleged involvement in the se*ual assault of a minor girl at a temple in Hangarahalli, Kunigal taluk, Tumakuru district. In accordance with the Protection of Children from S*xual Offenses (POCSO) Act, both people were placed in detention.
They were brought before a local court after their detention, and on Friday, the judge placed them under judicial custody. The case started on 10th February when Bala Manjunatha Swamiji used Abhilash to make a complaint with the CEN criminal police.
In the complaint, the Swamiji stated that he and some other people had been extorting money from him on behalf of HS Abhishek from Hosakere village in Kunigal taluk. A video footage allegedly featuring the Swamiji in a se*ually suggestive pose with a lady was the subject of the claimed threat.
As investigations progressed, a woman from Bengaluru came forward and filed a complaint against the Bala Manjunatha Swamiji and his associate, accusing them of sexually assaulting her over a three-year period. The assault had reportedly occurred while the girl was a kid, and the Swamiji was said to have kept in touch with her until January 2024.
