On Thursday, March 20, Sankar Subramanian Muthusamy defeated World No. 2 Anders Antonsen in the Swiss Open pre-quarterfinals, a Super 300 competition held in Basel, to record the greatest triumph of his senior career.

In a 66-minute fight, the 21-year-old Sankar Subramanian Muthusamy overcame a deficit to win three games, 18-21, 21-12, and 21-5. After leading 16–14 in the first game, Sankar, a former junior World No. 1, gave Antonsen, who is more used to Basel circumstances, the opportunity to rally and win the first game. In the second, though, Sankar rallied and wouldn’t allow Antonsen settle into a groove.

Priyanshu Rajawat and Kidambi Srikanth both lost in the second round, which was disappointing for India’s senior shuttlers.

After defeating HS Prannoy in the first round, Kidambi was easily defeated by Li Shi Feng, the sixth-ranked player in the world, 15-21, 11-21 in less than 40 minutes. In a 47-minute match, Toma Popov of France defeated Rajawat 21-15, 21-17. Tobias Kuenzi of Switzerland had previously lost to Rajawat in straight games.

Sankar Subramanian Muthusamy is an Indian badminton player who was born on January 13, 2004 in Chennai. In the boys’ singles division, he was once the world junior number one. He advanced to the 2021 Uganda International senior competition finals at the age of 17. Subramanian placed second at the World Junior Championships in 2022.

Sankar is from the small Fireball Academy in Chennai in Tamil Nadu, a state not known as a badminton powerhouse.

The sport of badminton wasn’t Sankar’s first choice. His father, Muthusamy, is a former tennis player and wanted his son to take it up but a spell of rain changed his mind. “One day I wanted to take Sankar to tennis, but it was raining. So, I thought of introducing him to an indoor sport,” his father had revealed.

That’s when, as a six-year-old, Sankar first went to the Fireball Academy at Mogappair in north-west Chennai and Aravindan, a former state-level player, had started the academy as a recreational center.

Sankar’s family isn’t particularly wealthy and his father worked in the Chennai Port Authority as an engineer, but took voluntary retirement to travel with his son for tournaments. His family also sold their house to fund their son’s badminton career with them now living in a rented home.

As Sankar started finding more success, he has won U-13, U-15 and U-18 nationals in India and even held the junior world number 1 ranking for a bit he found sponsors and is currently funded by the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, Go Sports, and the Murugappa Group in Chennai.

His favourite player is (China’s two-time Olympic champion) Lin Dan as Sankar is left-handed like him and watches Lin Dan’s matches at the Olympics and world championships all the time.

He is currently ranked 64 in the world with 25,120 points.

The youthful player vexed his higher-ranked opponent, who had trouble making unforced mistakes, by relying on his strong defence. Sankar easily ended the game with an 18–9 lead.

Sankar Subramanian Muthusamy dominated the decisive game from the start, making it a one-sided contest. The Chennai shuttler had an 11-3 lead and didn’t turn around.

Two rounds of qualifying for the Men’s Singles competition and one round each for the Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles competitions kicked off the tournament. Two rounds for the main draw, the quarterfinals, the semifinals, and finally the final on Sunday are scheduled to follow.
