Additionally, the firm and its managing director, Acharya Balkrishna, received a contempt notice from the court for their noncompliance with its orders, even though Patanjali had promised that such activities would end.
This court case started as a result of a petition filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which was prompted by grievances expressed by Keralan doctor Dr. Babu KV.
His evidence turned out to be the game changer in revealing Patanjali’s misleading advertising strategies. To prove his assertions, Dr. Babu communicated with various national and Uttarakhand government officials to protest what he considered to be “illegal” ads distributed by Divya Pharmacy, a Patanjali Ayurved Ltd subsidiary located in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.
In May 2023, Article 14, a news portal, published an article that discussed Dr. Babu’s legal fight against Patanjali. The article described his wide-ranging efforts, which included sending more than 100 RTI applications and letters to the different ministries and organizations.
Dr. Babu specifically sent letters to the Press Council of India, the Ministry of Ayush, Uttarakhand officials, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCI), and the Ministry of Ayush, Ayurveda, and Unani Services.
However, the legal standoff between Dr. Babu and Patanjali culminated in April 2024 when Patanjali co-founders, Baba Ramdev, and Acharya Balkrishna, offered unconditional apologies for what they had done. Shockingly, the move was rejected by the Supreme Court and the court remained uncompromising in its opposition to their stand.
