Who was Syed Abdul Rahim?
Syed Abdul Rahim was a former football player, coach, and manager of the Indian national team. He has been in the news because the film “Maidaan,” based on his life, was released on 10th April in theatres.
He was born in Hyderabad, British India, on August 17, 1909. He was a school teacher in his early years before he became passionate about football. He attended and completed his degree from Nizam College at Osmania University. He also completed a physical education diploma.
Syed Abdul Rahim was married to Saira and had a son named Syed Shahid Hakim, who was a former professional football player. Shahid gained fame in 1960 for representing India in the Summer Olympics. In addition, Hakim had positions as a FIFA official, an IAF squadron captain, and a referee. Like his father, he also managed the national team and was awarded the Dhyan Chand Award.
He died on 11 June 1963 in Hyderabad. At the time of his death, he was 53 years old.

Rahim’s side also made it to the finals of the Pestabola Merdeka in 1959 and won other notable competitions, including the Colombo Cup in 1952 and 1954.
