Know all details about Ayumu Iwasa along with his bio, age and height, who will replace Max Verstappen at the Bahrain FP1 race

Under Formula 1’s 2025 regulations, all full-time drivers must step aside for a rookie—defined as someone with no more than two Grand Prix starts—in at least two practice sessions during the season, up from one in 2024. This rule presents teams with an opportunity to utilize FP1 sessions, often held in warmer midday conditions, for rookie runs without affecting their preparations for qualifying or the race, which occur later in cooler twilight conditions. At Red Bull, four-time World Champion Max Verstappen will give up his car to 23-year-old Japanese driver Ayumu Iwasa for FP1 at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Iwasa previously made two FP1 appearances with RB in 2024.

DOB. 22-09-2001 · Height. 166 CM · Nationality. Japanese

Iwasa hails from a family with a history in motorsport as both of his parents participated in Honda Civic spec races in the 1990s and his grandfather also raced competitively. His grandfather, on his mother’s side, had a racing shop and his mother and grandfather raced together. The 23 year old is currently single and unmarried.

Iwasa’s racing journey began in Japan with karting at the tender age of four and after graduating from Osaka International Senior High School, he moved to competitive racing in 2014. That year, he won the Suzuka Karting Championship in both the Yamaha-SS and X-30 classes and also competed in the JAF Junior Karting Championship FP during his junior karting career.

Ayumu Iwasa is rapidly emerging as one of Japan’s most promising young racing talents, backed by both Honda and the Red Bull Junior Team. Born on September 22, 2001, in Moriguchi, Osaka Prefecture, Iwasa began karting in 2005 and steadily climbed the motorsport ladder. After graduating at the top of his class from the Suzuka Circuit Racing School, he earned a place in the Honda Formula Dream Project, eventually moving to Europe to pursue higher-level single-seater racing.

Ayumu Iwasa’s breakout came in 2020 when he dominated the French F4 Championship, winning nine of the 21 races and standing on the podium 15 times. That performance secured him a spot in Red Bull’s prestigious driver academy. He progressed to the FIA Formula 3 Championship and the F3 Asian Championship in 2021 before stepping up to FIA Formula 2 with DAMS in 2022. Over two seasons in F2, Iwasa claimed five victories, including standout performances in Monaco, Australia, and Saudi Arabia, and finished fourth in the 2023 standings.

Iwasa’s consistency, adaptability, and maturity behind the wheel have not gone unnoticed. He made his Formula 1 weekend debut in FP1 at the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix with Visa Cash App RB, replacing Daniel Ricciardo. He later returned for another FP1 outing in Abu Dhabi, filling in for Yuki Tsunoda. Prior to these sessions, he also took part in the 2023 post-season test at Yas Marina, marking his first experience in an F1 car. His calm approach earned praise from RB’s head of trackside engineering, Jonathan Eddolls.

In 2024, Iwasa shifted to Japan’s Super Formula series with Team Mugen, scoring a points finish on his debut and securing multiple podiums. Holding an FIA Super License, Iwasa is now seen as a legitimate contender for a future F1 seat. His journey—from go-karts in Osaka to the gates of Formula 1—is a testament to both talent and tenacity, and with Red Bull’s backing, his path toward the pinnacle of motorsport looks increasingly within reach.
