Instead of giving up on life, Averianna Patton gave Hale hope in response to the message. Even though the message was scary, she told Hale she was worried and prayed for his safety. After making Hale feel better, Patton called the Suicide Prevention Help Line and the police. She also called the Nashville Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, but was told to call the non-emergency number for Nashville.
Averianna Patton said that she called Nashville’s non-emergency line at 10:14 AM, but she had to wait on hold for almost seven minutes before someone answered and told her that an officer would be sent to her house. But it was hours before a police officer showed up after the shooting. She said that she felt terrible about what had happened and that she was sorry for the families who had been hurt.

Averianna Patton and Audrey Hale used to play basketball together in middle school, and they stayed friends by DMing each other often on Instagram. Hale said that Patton was “the most beautiful person,” which is why they told her about their mental illness. Hale, who was transgender, used the pronouns he and him, even though he was born a woman.
