Sheetal Devi, an Indian archer, made history by becoming the first Indian woman to secure two gold medals in a single edition of the Asian Para Games 2023.

That day, the Indian delegation won 17 medals in total, including seven gold ones. Amazingly, India placed fourth overall in the number of medals won, which was a noteworthy accomplishment in their Asian Para Games history.

Sheetal Devi’s amazing achievements continued on Friday when she won gold in the women’s compound archery solo event. She had already won gold in the compound mixed team competition the day before. Remarkably, this was her third medal at the tender age of sixteen. She is from Jammu and Kashmir, where she holds her bow with her foot in an impressive manner.

Who is Sheetal Devi?

Sheetal Devi is an Indian archer. She has been in the news because she became the first woman to secure two gold medals in a single edition of the Games.

She was born in 207 in Village Loi Dhar, Kishtwar, district, Jammu and Kashmir. His father is a farmer, and his mother is Goatherd. She also has a younger sister named Shivani. She was born with phocomelia syndrome, an uncommon congenital condition that prevented her limbs from growing fully.

She is still in school and is currently 16 years old.

Her career

In November 2022, Sheetal Devi’s athletic career started when she participated in the Junior National Archery Championship, where she faced off against able-bodied athletes. She went on to demonstrate her developing talent with victories in the Khelo India Nationals and Women’s Khelo India Games.

At a para competition in the Czech Republic in May 2023, Sheetal made her para competition debut. She did quite well, taking home two silver and one bronze medal. In just two months, she created history by being the first female armless archer to make it to the global finals at the Para Archery Championship 2023.

Recently, she won the gold medals in mixed team compound (open) and women’s individual compound (open). Additionally, she won a silver in the Women’s Doubles Compound (Open).
