Sakamoto was told he had throat cancer in 2014, and he said he had terminal cancer in June 2022, almost a year after he said he had rectal cancer. He wrote the music for a lot of Hollywood movies, like The Last Emperor and The Revenant.
In the late 1970s, the man from Tokyo was one of the first people to make electronic music. Together with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, he started the Yellow Magic Orchestra, or YMO. His work was a bridge between experimental and popular music, and he was known for his unique soundscapes and compositions that crossed genre lines.
