Officials from the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) and Temple University Campus Police Department (TUPD) have reported that Aidan Steigelmann, a 22-year-old student, has been suspended after being arrested and charged with posing as an ICE agent in a botched “raid” on the Temple University campus with two other students.
The Philadelphia Police Department announced that officers arrested 22-year-old Temple University student Aidan Steigelmann, accusing him of roaming around Temple University’s campus on Saturday night, including inside a food establishment, and posing as an ICE agent. Police are searching for a second suspect in the case, as well as another person and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office has charged Steigelmann with conspiracy to impersonate a public servant. A judge released him on his own recognizance while Temple has suspended him and the other involved.
The university said two current students and a former student were involved and according to authorities, the trio tried to get into the Johnson and Hardwick residence halls over the weekend, claiming to be ICE agents.
The individuals were denied access to the university and were tracked down by police on the 1300 block of Cecil B. Moore Avenue.
Vice President of Public Safety Jennifer Griffin and Vice President of Student Affairs Jodi Bailey sent out an email to the Temple community on Sunday night (February 2), stating that TUPD officials, in conjunction with PPD, initiated an investigation after three students were initially spotted at Insomnia Cookies on Cecil B.
A third student was observed filming the event, and two of the suspects were dressed in black shirts with the words “Police” and “ICE” written in white letters. The three students were also observed earlier that evening trying to enter Johnson & Hardwick Residence Hall but were turned away, according to Campus Police.
One of the student suspects was then apprehended by TUPD officers, placed on temporary suspension, and might potentially be expelled.
After the Philadelphia Police Department identified the student who participated in the botched ICE agents’ “raid” on Temple University as Aidan Steigelmann, 22, he was taken into custody and accused with impersonating a public worker.
Before authorities could reach the site, the three tried to flee the area in a Jaguar SUV.
A second person was located and added to TUPD’s wanted list on social media. The second person of interest was photographed by Temple University Campus Police. But on Monday, February 3, TUPD reported that the person had been identified, therefore they took down the earlier post. The identities of the other two people aren’t known though.
