19 year Amritpal Singh, a young Agniveer recruit from Mansa Punjab who had only started active duty one month prior, passed away on October 11. His last rites were performed on Friday in his village, Kotlu Kalan. A police contingent provided a guard of honour to his mortal remains. He served with a battalion of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in the Pooch sector. While serving sentry duty in the Rajouri Sector, Singh died from a self-inflicted gunshot injury.

According to reports, this was the first death of an Agniveer soldier from Punjab state.

Amritpal Singh’s Father Demand An Investigation For His Death

The soldier’s father, Gurdeep Singh, mentioned that he spoke with his son earlier on the day of his death and that he seemed to be in a good mood.

He said, “Amritpal informed me that he had taken time off work starting on October 24 to attend my niece’s wedding and that he was looking forward to the occasion. After completing his training at the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles training facility in Jabalpur, he paid a visit to the village in September before departing on September 20 to join his regiment in Poonch. We are requesting a comprehensive investigation because we are unaware of the circumstances surrounding his death.”

He further added that he saw his son’s body, and there was a gunshot injury on his left temple above the ear.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann paid his condolences on the soldier’s death and called it an irreplaceable loss for both the country and the soldier’s family. The Chief Minister gave the family his word that financial aid would be given in accordance with state policy.

Amritpal Singh’s father said that an Army Havildar and two jawans had followed his son’s body to the hamlet after the funeral services, but there was no military presence for a guard of honour.

The Indian Army then released a statement on Saturday stating that the deceased’s mortal remains were transferred in a civil ambulance that the Unit of the Agniveer had rented, along with one junior commissioned officer and four other ranks. The funeral services were also attended by Army personnel. 

The Indian Army stated, “According to the current protocol, the cause of death was a self-inflicted wound, and no guard of honour or military funeral was offered.”
