Manoj Jarange sought the instant issuance of caste certificates by claiming that 54 lakh records had been uncovered in Maharashtra thus far that designate members of the Maratha clan as Kunbi (an OBC sub-caste).
40-year-old Manoj Jarange-Patil was born on 1 November 1983 to Raosaheb Jarange and Prabhavati.
From a young age, he exhibited an extraordinary aptitude for technology, sparking his interest in the world of computers and programming and despite facing various challenges, he pursued his passion for technology with unwavering determination.
He completed his early education at his school, where his teachers recognized his exceptional skills and encouraged him to delve deeper into the realm of computer science and his passion for learning and his innate curiosity led him to pursue a degree in Computer Science at R.B. Attal College, Gevrai, Maharashtra.
Originally from the Beed district, Manoj Jarange-Patil settled in Shahgad, Jalna district after marriage. His involvement in the movement for Maratha reservations spans about 15 years during which he participated in various marches and protests. Despite personal sacrifices, including selling agricultural land, Jarange-Patil has remained dedicated to advocating for the Maratha community’s rights.
Having initially worked for the Congress party, Jarange-Patil later founded the Shivba Sanghatana which is an organization aimed at organizing protests for Maratha reservation. Over the years, he has become a prominent face in the fight for the community’s rights.
The demand for Maratha reservation dates back decades, but the Supreme Court’s decision in 2021 to quash the 16% reservation granted by the Maharashtra government in 2018 dealt a significant blow. The Bombay High Court further reduced the reservation to 13% in jobs and 12% in education.
Despite these setbacks, Jarange-Patil has continued to lead demonstrations, including a three-month agitation in Sasht-Pimpalgaon, Jalna district. His hunger strike in September garnered attention after clashes with the police, shedding light on the Maratha activist’s determination and resilience.
As Jarange-Patil embarks on a march towards Mumbai with thousands of supporters, he vows that this is the last chance for the government to fulfill the Maratha community’s demand for reservation. His decision to undertake an indefinite hunger strike starting on January 26 reflects the urgency and gravity he attaches to the cause.
The Maharashtra government filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court against its 2021 judgment, scheduled for hearing on January 24. This legal battle adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing protests and underscores the broader implications of the Maratha quota agitation.
Manoj Jarange-Patil’s journey from a grassroots activist to a prominent leader in the Maratha quota agitation exemplifies the persistent struggle for social justice and equality. As he leads the charge towards Mumbai, the outcome of this “final struggle” remains uncertain but Jarange-Patil’s determination signifies the enduring fight for the rights of the Maratha community in India.
