Who is Abhay Aima?
63 year old Aima, born in 1961, graduated from the National Defence Academy and elementary flying school in Bidar. His early ambition was to become a pilot in the Indian Air Force. However, he had to withdraw because his sitting height posed a hindrance to flying. Consequently, he transitioned into private banking. Before joining HDFC Bank in 1995, Abhay worked at Citibank. At Citibank, he collaborated with Aditya Puri and earned recognition as one of his favored associates.
Aima’s involvement in multiple critical divisions of the bank was very key, like Private Banking, Equities, Third-Party Products, NRI Services, and the International Consumer Business. Additionally, Aima was Director of HDFC Securities with a strong effect on the bank’s securities operations.
Over the 25 year period of his leadership, Aima’s impact was not only strategic but also operational as he turned-around the Global Consumer business while simultaneously having thousands of staff working under him in India, Middle East, Kenya, and Hong Kong, leaving a distinctive footprint on the bank’s roadmap. After leaving HDFC Bank in 2020, Aima acted as a member of the advisory board of the rural fintech and digital services company Spice Money from 2021.
The banker was the son of Omkar Nath Aima Aima, the lead character of Kashmir’s first film, Menzrath and was the nephew of Kashmir’s noted Chakri artist, Mohan Lal Aima. Abhay’s marriage had failed and he had no children and is survived by his brother Aloke Aima.
His last rites took place at the Santacruz crematorium on Sunday. Kashmiri Pandit Aima was living on his own at his flat in Bandra, Mumbai where he had breathed last at 4 pm on Saturday with him dying suddenly.
